SBI MLS Best XI: Week 12

Jamison Olave

By IVES GALARCEP

The Real Salt Lake team that won the 2009 MLS Cup and put together a run of some of the most attractive soccer in league history has been dismantled, but the efforts of several members of that team provided a reminder of just how good that RSL team was.

Four current and former members of the 2009 MLS Cup-winning RSL team made SBI MLS Team of the Week for Week 12. Current RSL players Ned Grabavoy and Chris Wingert played key rolls in their team’s 4-1 thrashing of Chivas USA. Two former RSLers who were traded away last winter, Jamison Olave and Will Johnson, were both instrumental in helping their new teams earn key results.

New England posted one of the better team efforts last weekend, beating Houston at BBVA Compass Stadium, and the Revs’ shutout was pulled off thanks to the outstanding work of teammates Jose Goncalves and Andrew Farrell. Goncalves has been playing like an MLS Newcomer of the Year contender while Farrell has done his part to show why New England traded up to make him the first player chosen in the 2013 MLS Draft.

Here is a the SBI MLS Best XI for Week 12:

  1. RSL had a nice game and finally finished some chances. However, Morales actually does not deserve to make the team this week. It was one of the truly rare off days for Javi where his touch and passing really failed him. Rimando was huge with some amazing saves but also was completely to blame on the goal as he came out and whiffed which led to a lazy floating header to go right in the middle of the goal.

I did not see the NE game, but after having watched a few other games of theirs, it is hard to believe they could get multiple players in a weekly best XI. They are one of the worst teams in the league and terrible to watch.

  2. Rimando should be the goalie – did you see the point blank shots he stopped to preserve the RSL win? Amazing. He also was on the 2009. Then there are Javi and Beckerman – also on the 2009 team. Amazing.

Can’t keep the band together forever in this league.

    • Gotta love parity! It’s beautiful. I love the EPL, Bundesliga, Serie A, etc. etc. just as much as the next fan but it gets boring sometimes knowing who will come out on top at the end before the season even starts! I guarantee Real Madrid and Barcelona will be Top 3 in La Liga NEXT SEASON. Halfway through this MLS season and I still have no clue who will win Supporters’ Shield or MLS Cup. Love it!
