Soccer Saturday: Your Running Commentary

After a commanding Bundesliga title campaign and a thrilling UEFA Champions League Final victory, Bayern Munich wraps up their storybook season on Saturday with a shot at the first treble in German history.

Bayern take on Stuttgart today in the German Cup final, a competition the powerful Bavarians last won in 2010. Stuttgart, who did not have the best of seasons in domestic and European play, enter Saturday’s final with a Europa League spot already wrapped up due to Bayern’s Champions League qualification. Although they will be missing a few players, Bayern look more than capable of sending Jupp Heynckes out with a victory that would cement this year’s team as one of the best of all-time.

Meanwhile, the European league season comes to a close with the final matchday in La Liga. League champions Barcelona host Malaga while rivals Real Madrid finish their disappointing campaign with a match against Osasuna.

Like the other major leagues in Europe, the final spot in the Champions League will be decided on the final day. A late equalizer in last week’s draw with Real Madrid kept Real Sociedad alive in the race for fourth, but they need a road win over relegation fighters Deportivo La Coruna and some help if they are to get into the biggest club tournament in Europe.

Valencia currently holds a two-point lead over Sociedad for the coveted fourth place spot, and a road win over Sevilla would lock up their place in the Champions League. But if they draw and Sociedad takes care of business at Deportivo, they will relinquish their spot due to Socidead’s superior goal differential. Valencia defeated Sevilla earlier this season, but Sevilla has had the upper hand on Valencia for most of their recent history.
