Toronto FC’s roster shakeup continued on Thursday with word that the club has waived Canadian midfielder Terry Dunfield.
TFC cut ties with the Canadian National Team midfielder in order to focus on the team’s collection of younger central midfield options. The arrival of Mattias Laba and impressive development of Jonathan Osorio and Jeremy Hall, coupled with the presence of playmaker Luis Silva, made Dunfield expendable.
“This was a difficult decision to make but our midfielders have been playing well, and there are young players to develop and find minutes for. We felt this was the best decision for both the club and Terry moving forward,” said TFC head coach Ryan Nelsen in a team-issued statement.
What next for the 31-year old? Though regarded as a solid midfielder, Dunfield could find landing somewhere in MLS difficult given his international status. The other Canadian teams don’t appear to be viable options, which means Dunfield could wind up signing in the NASL unless some MLS team with central midfield needs and an available international player slot make a play for him.
Dunfield had been sidelined with a knee injury that has kept him out of action since April. Acquired from Vancouver at the start of the 2012 season, Dunfield made 40 MLS appearances for TFC, scoring three goals.
