Despite playing down a man for 65 minutes, Chivas USA found a way to win their first match in 14 games.

Debutant Erick Torres, on-loan with the club from Chivas Guadalajara, scored the game’s only goal late in the second half to defeat the hapless Toronto FC, 1-0, at the StubHub Center on Wednesday night.

TFC midfielder Jonathan Osorio carried over new confidence stemming from his time with the Canadian National Team at the Gold Cup, creating multiple chances for his side. Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy made some key saves, though Jeremy Brockie missed a sitter in the 32nd minute that proved to be TFC’s best chance.

With former U.S. Men’s National Team defender Carlos Bocanegra making his debut as well for Chivas USA, it was Torres who marked his first appearance with a goal. In the 79th minute, Torres cut inside from the right and placed a shot on goal, which took a crucial deflection off TFC defender Steven Caldwell that directed it for a goal.

The defeat was the fifth match in a row without a win for Ryan Nelsen’s side.

    • At first I think it was arrogance – the fans and organization had so little regard for MLS that they thought (as others like Chivas have) all you needed was a couple guys from abroad and you could roll these stupid Americans. Since then I think it’s impatience – they’re charging so much for tickets, and expect that stupid MLS can’t be that hard to compete in, that when it doesn’t work after 6 months they junk it and start over. For the first part, I respect that – if you have the resources to compete, you’ve got a shorter leash from the fans. MLS rewards those who respect it, and build something patiently consistent over a couple years. SKC, RSL, Houston were not built in a season.
