Despite playing down a man for 65 minutes, Chivas USA found a way to win their first match in 14 games.

Debutant Erick Torres, on-loan with the club from Chivas Guadalajara, scored the game’s only goal late in the second half to defeat the hapless Toronto FC, 1-0, at the StubHub Center on Wednesday night.

TFC midfielder Jonathan Osorio carried over new confidence stemming from his time with the Canadian National Team at the Gold Cup, creating multiple chances for his side. Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy made some key saves, though Jeremy Brockie missed a sitter in the 32nd minute that proved to be TFC’s best chance.

With former U.S. Men’s National Team defender Carlos Bocanegra making his debut as well for Chivas USA, it was Torres who marked his first appearance with a goal. In the 79th minute, Torres cut inside from the right and placed a shot on goal, which took a crucial deflection off TFC defender Steven Caldwell that directed it for a goal.

The defeat was the fifth match in a row without a win for Ryan Nelsen’s side.
