After Saturday night’s New York Red Bulls victory over Real Salt Lake, Tim Cahill sat in his locker with a right knee that was severely swollen.
So it is no surprise that Major League Soccer that MLS All-Stars head coach Peter Vermes has added Philadelphia Union forward Jack McInerney to the All-Star Game roster in place of Cahill. It’s the first All-Star selection for McInerney, who has ten goals this season, good for the fourth-best total in the league.
The 20-year-old Georgia native is also the first Union player to be selected for this year’s All-Star game, set to take place on Wednesday at Sporting Park in Kansas City against AS Roma of Serie A.
McInerney was in Chicago with the U.S. Men’s National Team for Sunday’s Gold Cup Final victory. He was with the U.S. team during the group stage before being replaced for the knockout rounds. McInerney joined the team after playing for the Philadelphia Union in Saturday’s 1-0 win vs. the Vancouver Whitecaps.
