In his first start since leaving for the Under-20 World Cup, Seattle Sounders right back DeAndre Yedlin stepped up when his team needed him.
Down a goal in the second half, Yedlin headed a rebound off of Colorado Rapids goalkeeper Clint Irwin across the line for the tying goal. With nine players out injured, and Eddie Johnson away on international duty, the short-handed Sounders couldn’t muster another goal, and settled for a 1-1 draw the Rapids on Saturday at CenturyLink Field.
The match also saw on-loan Sounders goalkeeper Andrew Weber make his first start of the season, covering for the injured Michael Gspurning, Marcus Hahnemann, and Josh Ford. It was also the Rapids first points in Seattle in seven matches.
Taking advantage of the goalkeeper and lineup changes, the Rapids were the first to score. In the 60th minute, Drew Moor raced across the face of goal to send a header in for a goal off a Nick LaBrocca corner kick.
Five minutes later, it was the Sounders turn to capitalize. Midfielder Lamar Neagle hit a close range shot off the far post, with the ball ending up at the feet of Yedlin. His original strike was well parried by Irwin, but the ball flew right into Yedlin’s forward path, scoring on a header to tie the match at one.
