SBI MLS Team of the Week: Real Salt Lake

For a younger team that was supposed to be in rebuilding mode in 2013, Real Salt Lake has all the makings of league champions as they enter the second half of the season.

RSL extended their unbeaten streak to eight matches on Saturday night with a 3-0 win over former Western Conference leaders FC Dallas. Their first victory in the state of Texas maintained their top spot in the Supporters Shield race and earned them SBI Team of the Week honors for Week 20.

Despite missing four starters to Gold Cup duty and an injury to backup goalkeeper Josh Saunders, the visitors held off the FC Dallas attack and notched three goals in an impressive all-around performance.

RSL beat out Portland, Houston, Vancouver and New York for this week’s honors.

What did you think of RSL’s performance? See them staying at the top of the league? Which MLS team impressed you the most in Week 20?

Share your thoughts below.

  1. RSL is on a great run. What is encouraging is the depth they are creating with younger players getting so many chances. It will be nice to see what happens when Saborio, Beckerman, Beltran, and Rimando all get back. The depth at key positions will be really nice.

The best thing is they are playing really attractive soccer while creating a lot of chances and scoring frequently.

  2. Glad to see some recognition for RSL but I’d gladly give it all up to keep this streak alive and win the SS, USOC and MLS cup! If we can beat SKC this weekend with so many starters out (KB5, Rimando, Beltan, Saunders, Watson-Siriboe, Schuler, Salcedo), the world will have to take more notice! Thank $diety the game is at the RioT.

    • More accurately, he’ll win coach of the year for being the best coach this year. But I do agree that it’s fair to say he probably deserved it in years past too.

    • Except that he probably won’t win it. That prize will probably go to Caleb Porter as it seems that Coach of the Year always goes to the most improved team. Kreis is too consistent.

      • I think he will get it because how do you choose between Portland’s coach or NYRB’s coach? You don’t. You pick Jason.

  3. Sporting had 2 wins and outscored their opponents 5-1 during those 7 days. They should have been considered for this week also. I guess they will have to wait until they beat RSL this weekend before they will get Team of the Week respect.

    • BRING IT

In all seriousness though, I’m really looking forward to the game this Saturday. RSL’s young guys are really going to have to step it up since SKC have most (all?) of their players back from international duty. If they can hang with SKC without four starters, I’ll be convinced they have the ability to make a run for MLS Cup.

    • Thanks for the reminder! Haven’t followed MLS as closely the last 2 months due to work, but RSL-SKC is the kind of match worth making time for (and this is from a Houston fan)!

  4. If their young guns can hold it together through the rest of a tough july schedule so they can get their international players back, then yes they can keep the top spot. Talk about “depth test”
