Boyd converts penalty kick in Vienna’s Europa League draw vs. Asteras Tripolis

FUSSBALL - BL, Rapid vs Wacker

By FRANCO PANIZO

Rapid Vienna’s European dreams took a hit when Greek club Asteras Tripolis jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first half of their Europa League match, but Terrence Boyd made sure that result would not stick.

Five minutes after Vienna conceded the opener, Boyd drew and converted an equalizing penalty kick to help his club grab a 1-1 draw on the road in the first leg of their third-round Europa League qualifier vs. Asteras Tripolis on Thursday. The 32nd-minute goal was Boyd’s third of the season across all competitions after he scored twice in last Saturday’s 4-0 rout of Wiener Neustadt in league play.

The goal-scoring performance should help Boyd state his case to U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann, who will soon release what is expected to be a heavy European-based roster for an upcoming friendly against Bosnia & Herzegovina in Sarajevo on Aug. 14.

Boyd and Vienna host Asteras Tripolis in the second leg of their Europa League qualifying series next Thursday.
