Corona scores for Tijuana in friendly vs. Santos Laguna

Opportunities in the Club Tijuana starting lineup have been scarce during the Apertura season for American midfielder Joe Corona, but he may have given himself a good chance to feature more in the final four weeks of the season with his performance on Sunday.

In a friendly match against Santos Laguna at Toyota Field in San Antonio, Texas, Corona scored Xolos’ only goal in the 43rd minute, finishing on a first-time volley off a header by Diego Olsina that failed to reach the target. The goal tied the match, which finished at 1-1, after Santos Laguna took the lead three minutes earlier through Nestor Calderon.

Also taking part in the friendly match were Tijuana’s Americans Herculez Gomez, Paul Arriola, Greg Garza, and Bruno Piceno, while Santos Laguna youngster Benji Joya played in the second half.

Despite a number of impressive performances with the U.S. Men’s National Team this summer at the Gold Cup, Corona has played just six times in Liga MX play for Xolos during the Apertura, with four starts and eight appearances on the bench without appearing in the match.

In contrast, last season the 23-year-old midfielder played 41 times in all competitions for Tijuana over the course of 12 months from June 2012-June 2013. However, since Jorge Almiron took over the managerial post this summer, there have been suggestions that the Argentina manager doesn’t rate Corona very highly, which is why he hasn’t seen a lot of playing time.

What do you think of this news? Happy to see Corona score? Do you see him being given an opportunity to play going forward? Think he can help Tijuana into the Apertura playoffs?

  1. Well compared to the successes and the standings that the Xolo’s had last year (when Corona started under the old coach) and this year when he does not, it seems that the Argentine coach should not be rated highly.

  2. I was right behind the goal when he scored. It was a great strike and silenced the stadium, 90+ percent of which, were Santos Laguna fans. It was a fun game. Hope they do it again soon here. Liga MX teams always do well in SATX.

  3. Maybe a naive question, and I don’t really follow Liga MX, but why are teams in the same league playing friendlies with each other mid-season? That seems weird. Because of the international break? Do other leagues do that?
