There will be a new NCAA Men’s Soccer National Champion in 2013 after defending champion Indiana saw dreams of a repeat dashed by a familiar foe.
Akron jumped out to a 2-0 lead and held off a furious second-half charge from the Hoosiers to hold on to a 3-2 victory in their first-round NCAA Tournament match in Akron.
Reinaldo Brenes scored a pair of goals for Akron, which will now face Big East champion Marquette on Sunday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Thursday’s first-round action featured few real upsets, but did boast some nail-biters for heavily-favored teams. Louisville needed penalty kicks to fend off Denver, while UConn held off Quinnipiac, 2-1. Big East Tournament finalist Providence needed penalty kicks to beat Ivy League champion Penn, while St. John’s needed an overtime goal to knock off Delaware.
Navy recorded an impressive 3-0 victory against VCU to set up a second-round match-up against Wake Forest.
Seattle University made school history in beating Creighton, 2-1. The Redhawks victory was the first NCAA Tournament victory for the school in any sport since 1964. That win also sets up a second-round clash against rival Washington.
Here is a rundown of all of the Thursday night’s results:

Is that stiffler from american pie in the picture?
Don’t understand why WCC conference champion, LMU had to play Stanford at Stanford, who finished 4th in their conference ? Is this done on some national ranking ? If so, it may be as elusive as the infamous FIFA rankings.
Seattle – Washington should be a blast. Go Huskies.
Is Sea a soccer hotbed?
2n round NCAA face off of two teams in city limits, and most of those boys from WA and quite a few Sounders academy players.
Great to see both teams advance something like 10 Sounders Academy members between the 2 teams should be a good game.
5 California teams
5 North Carolina teams
Tough draw for Elon.
Go Phoenix!
Yeah tough draw for Elon go Fighting Christians at least that was
what they were called when I played there
Well they will only be the Phoenix until the Flaming Bird Coalition realizes it’s offensive. So you have that to look forward to.
Coastal Carolina is in South Carolina
Ives, do you have a tv schedule for the tournament you can post?
Louisville!
