For the first time in 18 months, Chiapas FC sit on the verge of making the Liga MX playoffs.

The squad, composed of a number of players on loan or contracted to San Luis before they relocated to Chiapas, picked up a huge 2-1 victory at home against second-place Santos Laguna, keeping the Jaguars three points clear in the Liguilla Playoffs.

The home side needed just six minutes to score the opener as Colombian midfielder Aviles Hurtado placed a finesse shot right into the top corner. The Guerreros found their equalizer in the 57th minute on a pretty one timed finish into the same corner of the same goal, with Darwin Quintero providing a cheeky assist with a chip over his defender.

However, nine minutes later, Chiapas took advantage of a poor clearance from Santos Laguna as Jose Toledo fired home inside the box, going five-hole on Santos goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez.

Here’s a closer look at the rest of the action in Liga MX Round 16:

XOLOS DEMOLISH ATLANTE IN HOME FINALE

In their final home match of the season, Club Tijuana put themselves within a chance of making the Liga MX Apertura playoffs with a 4-1 rout of Atlante.

The bottom club in Liga MX was no match for Xolos last Friday as striker Dario Benedetto scored a brace to take his goal total to five goals in his first season with the club. Veteran midfielder Cristian Pellerano scored on a penalty kick and Richard Ruiz scored the fourth for Tijuana as they overcame a red card to Fernando Arce in the 39th minute.

Atlante finished the match with ten men as well as Sergio Perez was shown a second yellow card in the 71st minute.

CHIVAS WIN FOR JUST SECOND TIME

Chivas Guadalajara’s abysmal season took a slight turn for the better on Sunday afternoon.

The club, which has been mired in a pretty awful last 12 months and have been battling Atlante for last place in Liga MX during the Apertura campaign, showed a workmanlike effort to take down Pumas UNAM, 1-0, at home in front of a sparse crowd at the Estadio Omnilife.

Rafael Marquez Lugo scored the lone goal 13 minutes into the game with a finish inside the box off his thigh. The win for Chivas was just their second of the season.
