A team renowned for their international stars will be opening up their 2014 preseason campaign with international opposition.

The Los Angeles Galaxy announced on Monday that they will play their first match of the 2014 calendar year in a friendly at the StubHub Center on Feb. 8 against FC Shirak of Armenia. Shirak are the defending champions of the Armenian Premier League and currently sit in second place in this year’s standings.

It will be the first-ever meeting between the two sides and the first time ever that the Galaxy have hosted a team from Armenia. Shirak are located in the Armenian city Gyumri, not far from Armenia’s western border with Turkey.

  1. Cool, are they leaving Armenia midseason for this?

Thought that the only leagues on break in January & February were the Scandinavians.

    • The Armenian Premier League’s last game before break was Dec. 3 and they don’t restart until March 8th. They switched to a Fall/Spring league with a break a couple of years ago.

    • and it’s all or nothing for this team in the CCL. when do they announce the Tijuana game date, anyone know? or did I miss that. anyway, the Galaxy need games to get fit since MLS starts the season when it does, right? they didn’t qualify for CCLnext year so it’s now or never with this group
