Toronto FC have bolstered their defense, acquiring left back Justin Morrow in a trade with the San Jose Earthquakes.
TFC and the Earthquakes completed a deal on Tuesday morning that saw the Reds send allocation money to San Jose in exchange for Morrow. The 26-year-old left back, who was an MLS All-Star in 2012, adds more quality and experience to a Toronto back line that is in need of help after demonstrating a tendency to concede late during Ryan Nelsen’s first year in charge in 2013.
“In Morrow, we are adding a young, All-Star caliber player to our back line,” said Toronto FC general manager Tim Bezbatchenko in a statement. “Justin’s steady presence, versatility and MLS experience make him a great addition to the club.”
Morrow spent the first four years of his career with the Earthquakes, who drafted him 28th overall in the second round of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft. He started 21 of the 26 games he played in during the 2013 campaign, adding one goal and two assists a year after a breakout season earned him an MLS All-Star selection and his first U.S. Men’s National Team cap.
Morrow joins Jackson and Gilberto as TFC acquisitions this winter.
