The final piece of Sporting Kansas City’s MLS Cup back four will be returning for 2014.

While pen hasn’t been put to paper quite yet, Chance Myers has reportedly agreed to terms for a new deal with the club and will be joining the squad in Tucson, Ariz. for preseason “soon,” Myers’ agent revealed via Twitter on Wednesday.

Sources tell SBI that the contract has been agreed to, and the new deal is a three-year contract.

The 26-year-old right back had previously been out of contract and was said to be exploring options overseas in Europe. Myers had also been seeking an increase in pay. His 2013 base salary ranked sixth in MLS among all right backs at $105,000.

The former No. 1-overall pick of the 2008 MLS SuperDraft, Myers started 26 games in the 2013 regular season for Sporting KC, scoring twice and adding three assists on their way to the MLS Cup title. He will join up with Sporting KC at their preseason camp in Tucson, Ariz. in the next few days.

Myers spent most of January training with the U.S. Men’s National Team and traveled and trained with the squad on their 12-day trip to Brazil. He was released from the squad last Saturday as the USMNT returned to Los Angeles.

Specifics of the deal have not yet been disclosed.

What do you think of these developments? Glad to see Myers situation resolved? Think his signing makes Sporting KC likely to defend their MLS Cup title this season?

  1. Personally, yes. Than its about the content being quoted and less about the medium of conveying substance or lack there of. You can always link to the websource. It’s preseason, whatever.

    • you are wildly off base on this one. They quoted the tweet, and attributed it to the author…. what else would you like?

Like it or not, Twitter is now a medium of communication, just like email, text messages and facebook posts. It should be handled, and presented in the way which it was originally created.

  2. I enjoy the offseason/preseason reporting, especially during a lack of play. But here it comes . . . since when is it common practice for SBI to provide tweets as a primary source of an article?
What’s next, screen shots? My concern is SBI will digress from soccer journalism to content social media reporting whether or not it is a primary source of information or not. Maybe it already as and I am way off base though. I mean they already let me post on the site.

  3. Really surprised that SKC was able to keep essentially their entire team together outside of Nielsen’s retirement. They’re going to be a force again.

    • Sporting is still a young team compared to a lot of the other elite teams in mls so this is going to be a reoccurring theme every offseason. They seem to spread the payroll out better than most teams with rsl and portland also doing a good job of that. I think they will be the hardest hit team in the expansion draft. Really deep with young up and coming talent. Wondering if they will use a slot to save a player on erik palmer brown who will still be 17.

      • They don’t have to … unless they change the rules (yeah, that sounded funny considering it’s MLS) … HG players are typically protected during an expansion draft … as are DP’s and the 11 players.
