The Colorado Rapids exceeded expectations in 2013, in large part to the leadership provided by head coach Oscar Pareja. If the Rapids are going to stay on their upward arc, they will have to do so with a different man in charge.
Pareja has stepped down as head coach of the Colorado Rapids on Friday, Goal.com reported on Saturday. New York Red Bulls assistant Robin Fraser is reportedly the favorite to replace Pareja, with former Portland Timbers head coach John Spencer also a contender.
The move comes after a highly-publicized courtship of Pareja by FC Dallas, but Pareja’s move does not free him to coach the club he once played for. Pareja had one more year left on his contract with Colorado, meaning he won’t be able to coach another team this year unless that team reaches an agreement with the Rapids.
The Rapids have yet to address the report publicly, but a decision on a new coach is expected to be made this week before the MLS Combine, which begins on Friday.
What do you think of this development? Disappointed to see Pareja leave Colorado? See him winding up with FC Dallas? Who would you hire if you were the Rapids?

Bring back Gary Smith!!!
I loved to watch Spencer play….but I don’t think that his playing skill has translated into being a good coach
Wow—to see such butthurt whining from people still, over 3 years later…
Anyway, as for the matter at hand, it will be interesting to hear the club’s reaction and to see what happens re that final contract year, as well as who fills the position, of course.
FC Dallas getting back at Colorado for stealing a championship from them
well, that sucks. why did this happen, again?
OP wanted to return to FCD where he played and coached before Colorado but FCD was not paying his buy out fee.. So he quit to make himself available!
Waiting to see how CO will be compensated..
Thanks, Beto.
Can Colorado just refuse to take compensation and instead make Oscar P sit at home for a year?
This stinks…just when Rapids were building momentum…FCD throws cash at Pareja. I agree, promote Cabrera. I have seen the results of teams led by Spencer and Fraser…not impressed.
Fraser managed Chivas, an impossible organization. Colorado could have extended Pareja at any time. Instead they pushed him away. Just awful job by Rapids.
Pareja is leaving cuz he has always wanted to be in Dallas.. Nothing the Rapids did or didnt do..
Cabrera would be an ideal fit, maybe Frasier .. Definatly not Spencer that would require the team to 180 once again
Not how I heard it. I believe Ives said Colorado is to blame for this on the pod.
Karma for bulldozing through to a championship
Haters are just confused admirers.
I’ll take that for what it’s worth from the mouth of Chad OchoCino
Hugely disappointing as a rapids fan. Also disappointing are the options listed. Promote Cabrera as head coach or look to the usynt coaches like Hugo Perez or Richie Williams. But I don’t see us winning championships with Frazier or Spenser.
+1 that is what most Rapid’s fans want
Bad timing from Oscar. Kind of sticks Colorado with a quick timetable, kind of a jerk move but maybe FC Dallas only recently made it worth Oscar’s time.
Who is Frazier? Oh, you meant Fraser.
