For Brian Mullan, there’s no place like home.

The Aurora, Colo. native signed a new contract to remain with the Colorado Rapids on Tuesday, keeping the 13-year Major League Soccer veteran with his hometown club. Per league and team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Brian is exactly the type of player that you want on your team, since he gives everything he has on the field and is a great professional off of it,” Paul Bravo, the Rapids technical director said in a statement. “As a true great in MLS and one of the very best players that Colorado has ever produced, we’re proud to have him on the Rapids, and excited that he’ll be returning for this season.”

Mullan, 35, is a five-time MLS Cup champion, winning with the Los Angeles Galaxy (2002), San Jose Earthquakes (2003), Houston Dynamo (2006, 2007) and the Rapids (2010). In his 13-year career, he’s made the MLS Cup playoffs on an incredible 12 occasions. Last season, Mullan struggled with injury and played in just 16 games, assisting on two goals.

    • Look, Mullan made a mistake. A huge one. He has paid for it on multiple levels. He has been regretful, apologetic, and sympathetic in every way possible. His career hasn’t been the same either and I’m not talking about age related issues. Mullan will forever be linked with Zak. People will prejudge and hate Mullan for that play. They are entitled to their opinion and that’s respectable. But Mullan is not the guy so people peg him to be. He is not a villain. He’s actually an incredible person that has been a tremendous asset to my community of Denver. His chartable works even before Zak did not go unnoticed. Like I said, he made a huge mistake. It’s just unfair dismiss his whole career because of that mistake.

      • Does anyone have any insight into whether Zakuani might play more next year? I know he was out all of last season because of a sports hernia. Surely this has just given him time to strengthen his leg even more? I still hope we’ll see the old Zakuani again because he was a really exciting player back then.

      • Also agree with what MMV said.. if you watched that game in Seattle where Zakuani and Mullan embraced each other for the first time, I think you would too. Clearly Steve Zakuani has forgiven Mullan and put it in the past.

If Zakuani’s fans (mostly referring to the Seattle ones) had an ounce of the class that he has, they would put it in the past as well.
