Report: De Rosario to sign with Toronto FC

Dwayne De Rosario

By CAITLIN MURRAY

Dwayne De Rosario is heading home.

De Rosario is apparently set to sign a new contract with Toronto FC this week, according to a report out of Canada.

De Rosario had been selected by TFC in the second stage of the Major League Soccer re-entry draft last month, but his addition to the squad was never quite assured.

The new contract brings him back to a team where he’s the leading scorer, but it remains to be seen how influential or utilized he will be this time around.

De Rosario had been traded away in 2010 after scoring 15 of TFC’s 33 goals that year. He ended up in D.C. United where he finished 2011 with the Golden Boot as the top scorer in MLS. In October, United had declined to pick up an option with the Canadian national team striker.

TFC had said after drafting him that they were looking to drive a hard bargain and pay him far less than the whopping $654,300 he made last year with United. De Rosario tallied three goals and two assists in 24 appearances for United in 2013.

De Rosario’s signing is the latest in a slew of moves by TFC. Brazilian striker Gilberto will join as a designated player with England and Spurs striker Jermain Defoe will supposedly join during the January transfer window.

What do you think of De Rosario returning to Toronto? Will he be able to light up the scoreboard for TFC once more? Is this a good move for TFC?
