Is Camilo Sanvezzo leaving Major League Soccer? Not according to the Vancouver Whitecaps.

The Whitecaps are denying a report from ESPN Deportes that alleges Camilo is joining Liga MX club Queretaro.

“There is no truth to the rumour,” the Whitecaps said in an issued statement Wednesday. “Camilo is currently under contract and we look forward to seeing him and the rest of the team for the start of our preseason camp later this month.”

The ESPN report on Wednesday had cited comments from Queretaro coach Ignacio Ambriz, who said Camilo could arrive in Mexico by Saturday.

The rumor could be a negotiation tactic to secure a better contract for the Brazilian forward, who was the leading scorer in MLS in 2013. Camilo scored 22 times last season and also had six assists in 32 matches, leading the league.

The Whitecaps had picked up the option on Camilo’s contract shortly after the season had ended and he reportedly earned $247,000 in 2013.

Should Camilo play in Liga MX or stay in MLS? Think the Whitecaps should give him a higher salary? Do you see him lighting up the scoreboards in MLS again in 2014?
