After yet another controversial midseason managerial change this week, with Jose Guadalupe Cruz being unceremoniously fired by Monterrey on Tuesday afternoon, attention turns to the pitch for Liga MX Round 8.
The biggest game of the weekend is undoubtedly the Mexico City ‘Super Clasico’ between Club America and Pumas UNAM in Estadio Azteca. Pumas boasts the league’s top scorer in Martin Bravo, a 27-year-old forward who has already scored six goals and keyed the club’s four game unbeaten streak. A Pumas victory would see them leapfrog their opponents and perhaps give fans cause to believe their team can make the playoffs.
America has failed to impress in 2014, and heads into the Clasico on the back of two 1-0 losses against Pachuca and Morelia. But Las Aguilas’ performance will have to be significantly better than it has been so far in 2014 to avoid defeat against one of its fiercest rivals. A loss could see the side drop out of the top eight and would certainly heap pressure on manager Antonio Mohamed.
Elsewhere, Tigres UANL will be hoping to pick up its first win of the season as it hosts Veracruz; second-place Chivas de Guadalajara travels to fourth-place Toluca; and Club Tijuana will try to maintain their lethal home form as they face an inconsistent Chiapas.
