It’s hard to imagine a better start to the 2014 MLS season for the Vancouver Whitecaps, as a 4-1 thrashing of 2013 Supporters Shield winners New York Red Bulls has earned the Whitecaps honors as this season’s first SBI MLS Team of the Week.

The Whitecaps completely outclassed the opposition behind a brace from Kenny Miller. Sebastian Fernandez added a 25-yard screamer in the 50th, while Pedro Morales increased the Red Bulls’ misery in the 89th. Red Bulls forward Bradley Wright-Phillips scored what was little more than a consolation goal in the 90th for a team that had been completely outplayed in every facet of the game.

The Whitecaps beat out the Houston Dynamo and Columbus Crew for this week’s honors, both of which picked up wins 4-0 and 3-0, respectively.

What did you think of the Whitecaps performance? Which team stood out to you in MLS Week 1?

  1. A lot of new talent in the league. Nogueria is a baller. Vancouver and Philly look much improved. DC & NYRB not so much. Great start to the season.

  2. I will go with Salt Lake winning in LA. They didn’t dominate the game, but they were in a battle of two of the best teams in MLS. Not a battle of two the mediocre teams (with NY missing players)

  3. Without Olave, NY is terrible, combine that with Wimpy Henry sitting out, I don’t think this is that big a victory.

  4. DCU, for daring to start the season with such a solid loss. After last season, a 3 win 24 loss league record, Olsen has the nerve to field a team (with one 2013 Supporters Shield winner and one Brazil-bound USMNT player) that can’t deal with Columbus. The fans expected better and the team needs to be better.

    I say…Olsen OUT!

    • Calmate. Too many new players for Benny to get the axe just yet. We play Columbus again in 5 weeks or so. If we have no improvement by then, his head belongs to you

  5. Against New England. I guess Ryan and SBI Crew felt a 4-1 beating against defending league winners means more…. I have to say though, they played a weak RBNY crew because of terrible defense selection and sub-choices from Petke.

    • Should have been 4-0. Their keeper misplayed a cross in injury time. They looked really good. Every team needs to buy one player from La Liga.

    • Dynamo fan here. I agree. NE is not as bad as the result shows, but beating the SS-shield holders after such a tumultuous offseason is a tad more impressive.

I have no doubt Houston will earn their share of “Team of the Week”s this season.

    • I didn’t get to watch Houston, but I watched the Whitecaps, I am not a Whitecaps fan, but the quality that they put on the field was very impressive, they made it look pretty easy. I got the feeling that Vancouver is going to win a lot of games this year….I could be wrong about that of coarse its just one game, but some of the play was world class.
