Americans Abroad: Weekend Preview

FUSSBALL - BL, Rapid vs Groedig

By FRANCO PANIZO

The U.S. Men’s National Team’s forward options have been discussed at length in recent months, but one player who is seemingly being overlooked by many observers is Terrence Boyd.

Having had to sit out Rapid Vienna’s last game due to yellow card accumulation, Boyd will be looking to make his way back into the club’s lineup against FC Trenkwalder Admira with the hopes that he can deliver a solid performance and improve his chances of making it to Brazil this summer. Boyd is currently in a bit of a scoring drought after not having found the back of the net since early March, but a match against the eighth-place club should give the 23-year-old striker ample opportunity to break out of that slump.

Juan Agudelo is another forward who could use an impressive outing this Sunday, and so too could FC Utrecht. The club is currently five points above the relegation zone, and a win over SC Heracles Almelo in their third-to-last game of the season would be a big step to Utretcht securing another season in the Eredivisie. Agudelo might be counted upon to help pick up the three points, and his World Cup dreams could certainly use a goal given that he has been held scoreless for just over two months.

Two other players, DaMarcus Beasley and Michael Orozco, will also be tasked with trying to help their club move out of the bottom half of their respective league. Cellar dwellers Puebla are set to host Club America on Sunday, and an upset win combined with a Veracruz loss to Pumas UNAM would move the Camoteros out of last place. Beasley is all but assured of reprising his starting role for Puebla, but Orozco is a question mark after picking up a knock in the club’s last match.

  1. what about the promising young American striker playing for the Sunderland U-21s? I forgot his name… he’s a dual national so JK better cap him, he might get first-team action before too long

      • Interesting, I hadn’t heard of him. He’s playing for their u-18s and apparently has at least ten goals this season, based on my two minute investigation on the Sunderland website. He’s 18 now so I assume he’ll play for the Sunderland U-21s next season. If they’re relegated, that’ll probably make it a little easier to break into the first team at some point.

        MLS needs to implement a setup like this to give players in this age group a place to develop. The reserve teams every team will be required to field starting next season is a good start.

    • He’s injured and would not have appeared anyway, except for Bayern II in the fourth division perhaps. At least the injury means his fanboys can still claim he would have appeared for the first team.

      • SlowArm, does your wife beat you? Do you need a hug or something? You go out of your way to slam people for things you project they are thinking. Doesn’t really add much to the thread other than anger. Maybe you should get some counseling.

      • Look, I respect your sentiment about not wanting to have so many dual nationals on our team (although I respectfully disagree), but honestly Green is an American now and can only play for America so there’s no point in wishing him ill. Regardless of what anyone thought before he filed his change of association, now everyone should have his back. Just saying.

      • Last week Bayern started Hojbjerg 18, Weiser 19 and Sallahi 20, off the Bareyn II squad, that were for the most part getting there first minutes in the Bundesliga.

  2. This week on Luchas Sabado…. No love as lost Jose “El Gringo” Torres takes on seven of his countrymen in a no-holds barred, star-spangled handicap match! What’s this?!? Tarjeta Roja?!?! Que pena!!!!

      • Ay dios mio! Because he was there first, American simpleton! Do you think my oldest hermano refers to himself as “Villano I”… Please… that pendojo is simply “Villano”

      • A lot of the American players in are called “Gringo LASTNAME”. It doesn’t matter that some have Mexican ancestry. They are from the states, they are Gringo’s. Torres has been called that for as long as I can remember.

      • Curious, what is our word for that. Meaning:
        American = “Gringo” in Mexico
        Mexican = “?” in the US
