The U.S. Men’s National Team takes on Mexico tonight and as much as the rivalry the teams share will take center stage, of even greater importance to both teams is how players do with their chances to audition for World Cup.
Episode 128 of The SBI Show takes a closer look at the friendly, including the lineup we are likely to see Jurgen Klinsmann trot out against ‘El Tri’. We discuss the right back position, which is very much up in the air, as well as the other players who need to do well on Wednesday night.

Gotta say, I could tell Ives had been drinking more than I could Garrett, though both were slightly out of character. Garrett was a little quieter than usual, and Ives didn’t take near as many shots at Garrett and/or sidebars/tangents as usual…and he didn’t hesitate when trying to make a point like he usually does (not that that’s a bad thing, just that you usually measure your words very carefully), it all just kinda flowed out of him.
Garrett may well have been more buzzed but I couldn’t really tell because he said like 15 words the whole time.
Solid show, just too short…hopefully they’re not too hung over to put a post game up really soon…
I LOVE FRANK. C’MON IVES, MAKE FRANK A POST GAME COMMENTATOR! MONEY IN THE. BANK, WE NEED THE HUMOR!………………
THANK YOU FOR SHOW DONT BEDRUNK NEXT TIME
ITS A PARTY FRANK, I SAY DRINK ALL YOU WANT AND HOLD A POST GAME SHOW!
Solid episode, fellas…
I’m sorry Ives I disagree the Rivalry is still as strong as it was in Columbus and every game before that. Mexico want their vengeance they don’t like the idea that the US helped them into world cup and the fact that they’ve been losing to us.
When Herrera was asked about did Mexico owe the US, he said ” They owe us a lot more for California. ” So don’t worry the rivalry is still alive.
Wow, haven’t seen where he said that. Rivalry definitely still alive. I guess it just doesn’t seem as strong because we’ve had Mexico under our boot for quite a while now.

it was a few places but that’s one source
That’s as far away from the truth as possible.
The most recent qualifier in Columbus was the first time in nearly five years that we beat Mexico in an official game. They had won the three previous official encounters.
History says that before California was Mexican it was Spaniard, and before it was Spaniard it belonged to native Americans….
We owe nothing… nada to “El Piojo” or Mexico….. (midget? I think)
typical arrogant Mexican… can’t, won’t say three words ‘we owe you’.
Piojo -> Head lice
Ives: I usually put your show on when I am doing menial work around the house, such as laundry and dishes etc. My wife recently declared that she did not like to listen to your voice as, and I quote, “that guy sounds as arrogant and condescending as you do when he talks about soccer.”
Don’t get me wrong, I love the show and have heard most of them, but I am wondering if either one of us should be offended by her comments.
It’s true, but that’s part of Ives’ charm. Now Grant Walh’s voice on the other hand…
I think you should be offended by your wife making you do laundry and dishes. Just kidding! I don’t think Ives sounds arrogant, just knows what he’s talking about and has to set Jared straight all the time.
Sets who straight?
lol, Garrett. My bad
NO DAVIS
Come and talk to me….I really want to meet you…
A little Jodeci circa 1991. I learned to make moves to girls with this song at parties in 8th/9th grade..well I tried to make moves
The beat we used was by EPMD, which Jodeci then borrowed. Our into songs are strictly Rap, no R&B. Not that there’s anything wrong with R&B, just not what we’re using.
What it really sounds like is the World Select music in Super Mario World caves for SNES.
Do you think with the recent changes in coaching staff we will see a change with tactics?
By the way, great show as always and the part about Julian Green was hilarious.
Ives said, “If he (Jones) gets injured… you’re gonna HAVE TO go with Bradley and Beckerman.”
HAVE TO? There are several options including Cameron, Williams and Edu. I’m done.
Beckerman has put some distance between the other options. COULD Klinsmann go with one of the guys you mentioned? Possibly, but given his preferences, and the fact Beckerman has been rock solid for the past year with the national team I’d put any amount of money you want on Beckerman getting the call if Jones is hurt.
Agreed. If Klinsmann is going to start some new players in new positions, it’s going to be on our defensive line. If someone like Yedlin starts, also starting a guy like Cameron or Edu doesn’t help you assess Yedlin’s abilities. Beckerman is more solid/consistent option in the middle, which would allow Klinsmann try newer players like Yedlin, Green, Gil on the flanks.
Anyone want to chime in as to why we have never seen Zusi in the CAM?
That is a really good question. I would think that it has as much to do with the other options Klinnsman has had because it is obvious that Zusi is held in high esteem by JK.
I just think we would get more production from our 3 man mid,( which I agree is a must for us at the WC), with his work rate over Dempsey. I think Dempsey is more effective when he starts on a wing, and makes runs from there.
Zusi’s service from the wing is too good to force inside.
What if Bradley is out, who do you project starting in the middle?
Thanks for the response Ives, but I have to disagree with you. I recall that Klinsmann opted to insert Cameron in Midfield ahead of Beckerman when Jones couldn’t continue. Beckerman has been solid this cycle, but I can’t see Klinsmann start him ahead of the options I listed above come the group stage. His lack of quickness and speed is a factor that can’t be overlooked at defensive mid against Ghana, Portugal and Germany.
