Just three games remain for teams to claim one of the eight available places in the end-of-season Liguilla, and with only five points separating third-place Pumas UNAM from sixteenth-place Monterrey the battle looks set to go to the wire.
The standout fixture of Round 15 is arguably Tigres UANL hosting Club Tijuana at the Estadio Universitario.
Tigres head into the game fresh off Wednesday night’s 3-0 Copa MX triumph over Alebrijes de Oaxaca. The win saw Tigres lift their first silverware since the 2011 Apertura Championship, and their first Copa MX title since 1996.
Xolos were also involved in a Wednesday evening game, playing Cruz Azul in the CONCACAF Champions League semifinal. Sadly for their fans they failed to replicate Tigres’ success, losing 2-0 in Mexico City to go out of the tournament 2-1 on aggregate.
Tijuana head into this weekend’s game only three points ahead of Tigres and with a goal difference that is just one better than their opponent’s. The winner can take a big step towards the playoffs, though if Xolos are to leave Monterrey with any points they will need to significantly improve their away form. It is more than a year since they won a game outside the Estadio Caliente.
