Nearly two years after a somewhat surprising divorce from the New England Revolution, Shalrie Joseph is making his way back to the club where he established himself as a professional.

New England announced on Tuesday afternoon that they have acquired Joseph, a Revolution legend, via the Waiver Draft. The 35-year-old midfielder rejoins the club after spending much of the past two seasons with Chivas USA and the Seattle Sounders.

Drafted by the Revolution in 2002, Joseph has enjoyed a successful career in MLS up to this point. He has 283 appearances, including a Revolution-record 261, 40 goals and 35 assists in regular-season play. He was also a finalist for the 2009 MLS Most Valuable Player award, a four-time MLS Best XI selection and an eight-time MLS All-Star player.

Joseph did not make a single appearance for Seattle this season and was waived by the club earlier this year. He has 18 starts in 22 matches, three goals and one assist since being traded by the Revolution back in August 2012.

What do you make of the Revolution reacquiring Joseph? Do you see him making an impact on the field this season? Wishing your club would have picked him up?

  1. I’m sad for him that he wasn’t able to play in Europe during his prime like he so badly wanted. I loved watching him play for those New England teams that made it to the MLS Cup finals.

  2. If it’s cheap it might be a nice gesture to retire a Rev. But as a Dynamo fan I’d say you want to avoid a Brian Ching-type long goodbye where a player plays well past their sell by date at a veteran salary.

  3. At worst, he’s a strong presence to fill the Reis void in the locker room on a very young team. At best, maybe he’ll play a bit

  4. As much I have seen the game pass him by in some ways, in many ways I am happy to see him return. Hopefully we’ll see someone of african heritage have some managerial influence on the game – a la Viera. Good luck Chaz!

  5. Why was their a waiver draft today? Did anyone else get claimed? Was this just for Sharlie? Is he on the same contract?
