Danny Williams’ strong run of form has apparently been interrupted again by some knee issues.

According to a report from English outlet GetReading, Williams was held out of Reading’s 3-1 loss vs. AFC Bournemouth on Tuesday because of swelling in his knee. While it is unknown which knee is the one that is currently bothering Williams or the severity of the injury, it seems likely that it is the same kneeĀ that was swollen when he returned to the Royals following the U.S. Men’s National Team’s friendly against Ukraine in early March.

Williams has strung together some fine performances for the club that has hopes of securing one of the Championship’s promotion play-off spots. The 25-year-old midfielder has scored three goals in his last seven games for Reading, including a stunning game-winner late in a 1-0 victory over Charlton Athletic on April 5.

Those performances boosted Williams’ chances of being called into the U.S.’s preliminary World Cup roster next month, but this latest knee problem has left some doubt as to whether he will be able to compete for a spot on the final squad that travels to Brazil in June.

What do you make of Williams’ latest injury? Worried that this knock could linger and rule him out of contention for the World Cup roster? Like his chances of going to Brazil if he is healthy?

  1. my home town of Bournemouth is really playing well, two years and gone from League One to hopefully the Premier League!

  2. See what did I say a few days back,
Williams, used that one good leg too much and now it’s going to fall off.
Anyway Williams, is a good candidate for next Olympics and the 2018 cycle.

  3. I like him deep in the midfield but nowhere else. Klinsmann tried him as an advanced right midfielder and he was terrible. He doesn’t do anything remarkable, but he’s got better measureables than other candidates in that position (Kljestan, Torres, Beckerman, Edu).

    • He will likely pair up with Bradley in the future. He is faster than Beckerman. I doubt as composed but still could be a very slid D mid.
      I should watch Reading more.

      • I have been a doubter of Williams, but maybe he will be the answer there. Jones can do the job most of the time, but not reliably. Beckman is smooth, but not athletic. Clark is good and experienced, but has a stigma. Edu is athletic, but can’t distribute.

      • Williams can be the best of both worlds. Can is the big word. At the least he will still get a shot at the next WC.

  4. Hate it for the guy. I’ve met the guy when he was in Florida for a US training camp, and he’s a class act; very polite. That being said, I think 2018 is his best shot. Though I think he’s a better player overall than Beckerman, I think Beckerman is too entrenched with this team to be unseated by D-Will for 2014. Considering we are bringing four central mids (JJ, MB90, Beckerman and Mix), plus with Cameron able to play central mid, I really can’t see Jurgen bringing another one.

Quick recovery to him! Reading needs you.

    • Awesome to hear that he’s a solid guy.

But, I also think that Beckerman is a solid guy and seems to be a “team-first” guy. It’s obvious that JK likes him and I hope that Kyle will make it to Brazil because he has really put in the work and performed when called upon. Is he world class? No. But he’s good enough to make the squad.

Like you said, 2018 will be Danny’s time.

  5. wow! wrong time for D.Williams to come up with health issues…

I hate to say this but the three-player race for JJ’s backup roll willl come down to Beckerman and Edu.
