Patrick Mullins was widely-regarded as the best player in college soccer over the past two years, but injuries had kept him from flashing that quality early on in his rookie season.

Mullins finally had a chance to show his stuff this weekend and he showed why he was so highly-rated, scoring a beautiful goal and drawing the eventual match-winning penalty kick in the New England Revolution’s 2-1 victory against Toronto FC. Mullins’ efforts earned him SBI MLS Rookie of the Week.

Mullins’ left-footed blast helped erase a first-half deficit for the Revs, then he had a shot blocked by Doneil Henry’s hand for a penalty that Lee Nguyen converted for the winner.

Mullins beat out Chicago’s Harrison Shipp, Colorado’s Marlon Hairston and San Jose’s J.J. Koval for this week’s honors.

What did you think of Mullins performance? What other rookie impressed you this week?

  1. Good to see. I watched him in the final four last and was very impressed. If he gets his confidence, he will give Harrison Schipperke a run for his money for RoY.
