After losing their previous four games by a combined 10-0 scoreline, the Houston Dynamo were more than ready for the league-wide World Cup break.

However, their first game out of the break proved to be nearly identical to those that preceded it, as the Dynamo were knocked off by the Montreal Impact on Sunday, 3-0 behind a Jack McInerney brace at Stade Saputo.

After a back and forth first half that saw both sides dominate their fair share of possession, McInerney got things going for the Impact when the 21-year-old forward took advantage of some relaxed Dynamo defending in the game’s 41st minute.

McInerney found a pocket of space in between Dynamo defenders Kofi Sarkodie and Jermaine Taylor, leaving the Impact forward with plenty of space to direct an Eric Miller cross past goalkeeper Tally Hall and into the back of the net.

McInerney’s second of the night, which was his seventh of the season, was of the much more spectacular variety.

Substitute Justin Mapp found space on the right side in the 75th minute and whipped in a cross to the center of the box towards McInerney. Mapp’s pass ended up being slightly behind the young forward, who compensated by getting flick on as he turned and directing the ball over a helpless Hall, off the post and over the line to make the score 2-0.

Marco Di Vaio put things out of reach just four minutes by pushing the Impact’s lead to three. Much of the credit will go to midfielder Andres Romero, who weaved his way into space through the left side of the Dynamo defense.

Hall parried away Romero’s intial shot, but the ball found it’s way to the streaking Di Vaio inside the six yard box with an open net. The Italian tapped the ball home for the Impact’s third and final goal in what must have been one of the easiest finishes of his career.

With the win, the Impact pick up their 14th point of the season, which sees them five points out of a playoff position in the Eastern Conference. Meanwhile, the Dynamo remain on 17 points despite having played two extra games than the Impact.

The Dynamo will look to break out of their slump on July 4 when they host the New York Red Bulls. The Impact’s next contest will come on July 5 when the Canadian side travels to Los Angeles to take on Chivas USA.

  1. What is the record futility in MLS? Houston have not scored in 5 games. They have conceded 13 in those 5. Surely that is approaching some sort of record?

    • As the season has progressed I am leaning more and more to just blowing up the whole organization. At this point there is nobody on this team I wouldn’t mind see traded. Tough to watch anymore and I have to force myself to go to games anymore.
