The 2014 World Cup is underway — and the controversy is already heating up. Neymar and Oscar led Brazil to a come-from-behind win to open the tournament, but it was a dubious penalty kick that remained a talking point after the match. Meanwhile, outside of the pitch, protestors continued to oppose the game, clashing with police in San Paulo.

Injury scares hit Portugal and the United States during training in Brazil. Cristiano Ronaldo had to leave a training after only about 20 minutes with his knee bandaged with ice, adding more doubt to the Portugal striker’s match fitness. And Tim Chandler spent the day recovering from a “minor” leg injury, U.S. Soccer said.

In Major League Soccer news, Commissioner Dan Garber said Miami might not become the next MLS franchise if a downtown stadium location can’t be secured. And New York City FC added one more to its roster in Montreal Impact’s Jeb Brovsky.

  1. Where’s the related story about Jurgen Klinsmann wrapping Michael Bradley, Jermaine Jones, and Tim Howard in bubble wrap?

  2. Blatter’s comment about the Japanese referee gifting the win to Brazil:

“If you criticize the referee, you are a racist!”

With Marcelo, Luis and Alves in defense, this Brazil team doesn’t stand a chance, unless, of course the referees continue to gift them 1 -2 goals per game.

    This started too early.

At least in 2002 the Koreans waited until the 1/8 and 1/4 finals in what was the most disgraceful WC of our time.
