SBI World Cup Man of the Match: Giancarlo Gonzalez

Costa Rica has enjoyed a great deal of success so far at the World Cup, and its stingy defense has been one of the reasons why.

That trend continued Tuesday as Costa Rica earned a point against England in a 0-0 draw — the Ticos’ second shutout in as many games. In three matches at the World Cup, Costa Rica has given up just a single goal. One.

A big factor in Tuesday’s draw was the play of defender Giancarlo Gonzalez. The 26-year-old forced three interceptions and added eight clearances in 90 minutes of work. Gonzalez also recovered four times in the match, which doesn’t even include a crucial tackle inside the Costa Rican penalty area to keep England off the scoreboard.

Gonzalez beat out teammate Roy Miller and England’s Daniel Sturridge for the honors.

What did you think of Gonzalez’s performance? Which player stood out the most to you?

  1. As a crew fan, I love the guy, but I’m hoping some English team took notice and makes an offer we can’t refuse. We need the cash unfortunately.
