After Ghana lost to the United States in their opening match, they needed a result against Germany.

Thanks to Asamoah Gyan, Ghana got that result.

Ghana’s captain scored his first goal of the World Cup in the 63rd minute, nine minutes after Andre Ayew equalized for Ghana. That second goal, which gave the Black Stars a 2-1 lead, was vital, as Germany’s Miroslav Klose would equalize eight minutes later.

Gyan’s goal was the fifth of his World Cup career, tying the all-time record for African players. It also earned him the SBI Man of the Match award. He earns the honor over Ayew and Germany’s Mario Götze, who earned the opening goal for Germany.

Miroslav Klose also earns an honorable mention. His goal, the 70th of his international career, was his 15th at the World Cup, tying the all-time record held by Brazil legend Ronaldo.

  1. Gyan deserved that honor. Thanks Gyan for putting Africa on the world scene. God rewarded Gyan for the mischief that Uruguay Gave us at that awful 2010 quarter-final. Go blackstars go. The sky is the limit. Thanks, Gyan.

  2. I know the FIFA rankings are not perfect. However, how the heck can Ghana be #37th ranked. I think they should be in the top 15.
