Islam Slimani picked the right time to net his second-ever World Cup goal.
Facing elimination, Slimani headed home a 60th-minute free kick to knot Algeria and Russia up 1-1. The goal would help the Algerians secure a place in the Round of 16 — where it will play Germany for the first time at the World Cup since 1982 — with four points in Group H.
The 26-year-old forward had limited chances Thursday in 91 minutes of action, but put away his best opportunity when it mattered, earning him SBI World Cup Man of the Match.
Slimani beat out teammate Yacine Brahimi and Russia’s Alexander Kokorin for the honors.
Was Slimani your Man of the Match? Will Algeria be able to find success on set pieces against Germany?
