SBI Thursday Rewind: Altidore to rejoin Sunderland; Diskerud shows what USMNT missed; and more

Jozy Altidore’s unlucky hamstring strain in the U.S. Men’s National Team opener in Brazil cut his time at the World Cup short, but it shouldn’t interfere with his club season. Sunderland manager Gus Poyet said Thursday he expects Altidore to be ready to go for the Black Cats preseason after the World Cup concludes. That’s good news for the striker as he left Brazil looking far from fit — although U.S. Soccer had teased that Altidore was available by the USMNT’s last match of the tournament, Altidore had managed only a jog in the pre-match training session. Poynet’s comments also confirm that Altidore has opted to stay with Sunderland, where he saw limited playing time, rather than try to make a move elsewhere.

For Mix Diskerud, he left the World Cup to return to a club team in full swing, and though he didn’t feature for the USMNT in Brazil, it seems he got a boost anyway. Playing for Rosenborg BK for the first time since May after much time on the bench, Diskerud scored a volley for his club Thursday, helping Rosenborg seal a win in Europa League qualifiers.

And it was a nice try for Luis Suarez and the Uruguay Football Association, but alas, his hefty ban by FIFA will not be lifted after an appeal failed.

  1. I heard from other websites that DeAndre Yedlin is turning down the european offers in favor of staying in MLS. Is there any truth to this?
