A 10-man Montreal Impact held on Wednesday for a win 3-2 over C.D. FAS. It was their second win in the CONCACAF Champions League group stage and their second match playing down a man.

Led by a Marco Di Vaio brace, the Impact overcame a two-goal rally by FAS and weathered 17 minutes shorthanded after midfielder Felipe drew a second yellow. After twice scoring to equalize, FAS’ undoing came in the 60th minute when a tackle on Ignacio Piatti gave Di Vaio the spot kick, which he easily converted.

Montreal opened the match with a roaring start as Andres Romero and Di Vaio scored back to back goals in the seventh and eighth minutes.

First, Piatti slipped a pass through the box to Romero for a shot far post. A minute later, a long through ball from Dilly Duka found Piatti, who knocked it to an oncoming Di Viao. Di Vaio fired low past goalkeeper Adolfo Menendez, giving Impact the extra lead early.

FAS answered back in the 33rd minute. Jorge Moran fired a rocket from outside the box that deflected off Impact’s Wandrille Lefèvre and well out of the reach of goalkeeper Evan Bush.

Marcio Teruel scored a penalty for FAS in the 51st, for what was then an equalizer, but Di Vaio would find the lead again nine minutes later on a penalty kick of his own.

Group 3 continues with FAS traveling to face the New York Red Bulls on Aug 26. The Impact won’t be back in Champions League action until Sept. 17, when they will host the Red Bulls.

  1. It’s too bad Ottawa didn’t win the Canadian Championship. That hypothetical game would have been too FAS too FURYous. I’ll see myself out.

  2. Both penalties looked suspect, but the dive by the FA player was blatant.

Nice to see a three-figure crowd supporting the home side.

Hoping that the match and travel mean that Montreal will be tired against RBNY this Saturday. AS also have a league game on Saturday, and then will have to travel to play RBNY on Tuesday. RBNY’s situation is tough, with two games in four days, but both of their opponents have it even worse.

  3. My favorite part of early CCL and UCL is seeing all these clubs that usually aren’t on the telly.

(Just hope that eventially some day a club from El Salvador will have a packed stadium for Champions League game the same way that club from Slovenia did against Celtic. Baby steps I guess.)
