Reports: Green nearing season-long loan to Hamburg

Julian Green

By DAN KARELL

It looks like Julian Green may be leaving Bayern Munich after all in search of first team minutes.

According to multiple reports in Germany, Green is close to signing with Hamburg on a season-long loan. Green made the game-day roster for Bayern in their Bundesliga opener on Aug. 22 but didn’t appear off the bench.

The news comes as a bit of a surprise, as Green was adamant during Bayern’s U.S. tour that he would be staying with the club to fight for his place. However, it seems that he’s either changed his mind or the club management has decided a loan away and a chance for first-team soccer is more important.

Neither Bayern or Hamburg have confirmed the report. Both clubs have until Monday at 6 p.m. local time to reach an agreement.

Green starred for Bayern Munich II last season, scoring 15 times in 23 appearances, and made his first-team debut as a late substitute against CSKA Moscow in the UEFA Champions League in Nov. 2013. Green of course then became a recognizable name around the world with his impressive goal against Belgium in the eventual 2-1 defeat for the U.S. Men’s National Team in the 2014 World Cup round of 16.

Hamburg were nearly relegated last season for the first time in their club’s history, finishing in 16th place and needing a 1-1 aggregate scoreline, surviving on away goals against Gruether Furth to remain in the Bundesliga this season.
