SBI Team of the Week: New York Red Bulls

It’s said that big-time players show up when needed most. That was the case for the New York Red Bulls this past week, anyways.

Down a goal — and in one case, a man — twice this week, the Red Bulls looked to the likes of Thierry Henry, Dax McCarty, and Bradley Wright-Phillips, and each provided their own big-time moments to help last year’s Supporter’s Shield winners earn four points and SBI Team of the Week honors.

The Red Bulls picked up a point Wednesday at a roaring Rio Tinto Stadium in a 1-1 draw against Real Salt Lake. Henry reduced the early 1-0 deficit with a calm strike past goalkeeper Nick Rimando in the 57th minute to help the Red Bulls earn a favorable result.

New York then returned home for a weekend meeting with the New England Revolution. What looked to be disaster early played to a 2-1 victory for the Red Bulls. Down 1-0 and reduced to 10 men by the 47th minute, McCarty and Wright-Phillips turned the momentum around with goals to seal up three points.

The Red Bulls beat out Real Salt Lake, the LA Galaxy, and the San Jose Earthquakes for the honors.

What did you think of the Red Bulls’ big week? Can New York make a run up the Eastern Conference standings to challenge the likes of Sporting KC and D.C. United?
