SBI Thursday Rewind: A USMNT roster of youngsters; a look at deserving uncapped players; and more

The U.S. Men’s National Team roster was announced Thursday and chances are there are some names you haven’t heard. Coach Jurgen Klinsmann explained that the new World Cup cycle means he wants to look at new players, including some young players that are relatively unknown amongst fans.

Meanwhile, SBI’s Ives Galarcep takes a look at the uncapped American players who may warrant a look from Klinsmann during the experimental phase of the new World Cup cycle.

And it looks like Sepp Blatter isn’t losing his post as FIFA’s president anytime soon. UEFA president Michael Platini told reporters Thursday he will not campaign against Blatter for the presidency, meaning Blatter will likely coast to a fifth term.

  3. Something occurred to me that they haven’t had to consider in 20 years. Players called into the NT in this era usually get paid. Thousands of dollars a game, I believe. Can Morris take the money and play NCAA? Or does he have to play for free to stay eligible?

    Related question, conspiracy theory, if we for a moment consider the possibility that even as talented as Morris is said to be, he might or might not be ready, could JK have brought him in for a cameo to market his wares abroad? The ready assumption seems to be that he’s back to Stanford after the game, and then the Sounders academician is headed to the NW. But Ibeagha didn’t sign with Houston, nothing says you have to sign with your academy. The US has periodically elevated players above their station to get them playing time and perhaps audition them for foreign suitors. Is it possible Morris is in to be showcased, and if so, would the intent be sign now or sign after Stanford?

    • Someone on BS said that Morris’ flight and hotel being paid for are completely ok….he would just have to decline the money, should he actually play in the game. I believe players get paid only if they receive a cap, not for getting called up?

      There’s probably 0% chance that Morris actually plays. Bedoya, Green and Altidore will almost assuredly start in the attacking roles, with Gyau, Wood and Rubin being the guys that spell them off the bench

      If that was JK’s primary intent vis a vis Morris, then it would be a lot easier for JK to spend a day or two on the phone or computer with his huge network of contacts, put them onto the kid and let them do their work.

      And if he is showcasing Morris to foreign suitors, he must really rate the kid highly since he would not do that if the kid wasn’t any good.

      In which case calling him in makes perfect sense.

      You make it sound vaguely shady, yet Bradley did similar things with Benny Feilhaber and that kid from Ghana who shall not be named.
