Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

Timmy Chandler Eintracht Frankfurt

By FRANCO PANIZO

Timmy Chandler may have spent some of his more formative years at Eintracht Frankfurt, but it took him until this weekend to earn his first start for the club.

Chandler got the nod from his hometown club on Saturday, starting and going the distance in a 2-2 draw vs. Schalke. The 24-year-old Chandler – who was previously at Eintracht Frankfurt from 2008-2010 – was deployed as a right back in the match that marked his second appearance for the Eagles. Unfortunately for him and the club, they let a two-goal lead slip away and were forced to settle for a split of the points that extended their current winless run to three games.

It was a much brighter weekend for forward Andrew Wooten, who once again came through a with a late winner for SV Sandhausen. Wooten scored in the 80th minute to lift his side to a dramatic 1-0 triumph over VfR Aalen on Friday, replicating his performance from the weekend prior in which he scored in the 83rd minute to push Sandhausen to a 1-0 win. Wooten, 24, now has two goals in his first five appearances with his new club.

Brad Guzan was not as fortunate when he and Aston Villa took the field, as they suffered a 3-0 loss to Arsenal that ended the Villans’ red-hot start to the season. What made the defeat even worse for Guzan was that all three goals he and his defense surrendered came in a span of five minutes late in the first half, but they can at least take solace in the fact that the loss only dropped them down one spot to third place in the Premiership table.

Here is how the Americans Abroad fared this weekend:

What do you think of these performances? Envision Chandler getting a string of starts for Eintracht Frankfurt now? Think Wooten is beginning to put together a scoring tear? What do you think led to the Villans’ demise vs. the Gunners?

  1. This space is like a phone call between human resources departments: We can only confirm that Jozy Altidore dressed, got on and played x number of minutes, but we can’t tell you if he was a good worker or not.

Geez, was it a favorable performance or not. The only way we get some kind of progress report is if the player scores or assists.

    How did they do???

    • Photo Caption: A challenge for the ball between Timmy Chandler and Riff Raff was briefly interrupted when the pair witnessed leaked photos of Cristiano Ronaldo undergoing his weekly Brazilian wax.

  2. Utterly bizarre that Juan Agudelo can’t find a club.

Is he coming back to MLS? Almost think he’s going to have to after failing to latch on anywhere in Europe.

    • So weird. I have no idea what the heck happened other than maybe he was banking on getting a permit on his second hearing and burned all his other bridges.

    • yeah, such a bad situation. from what i’ve read, it’s really come down to $$$. i believe Seltzer reported NE even put out a short contract offer that would take him through January. he rejected (granted, MLS could have blocked it) hoping for Europe but then neither Lisbon, Mainz, Utrecht, Hanover, or anyone else ended up signing him. crazy.

  3. good stuff int he Bundesliga. hopefully Gyau can get off the bench, but it is good to see him even on the bench. also, Morales had an assist in his game. good weekend from the Mexico-based contingent too.

  4. Time to accept it: Altidore is just one more in a long list of American players that got to where they are by being big, strong and overtrained. Kicking the ball very hard gets you places but you will eventually get exposed if you buy into your own hype.

    • Don’t be ignorant. The guy owns the single season record for goals by an American in Europe. He’s one of the most successful American exports ever and he’s only 24 with plenty of time to improve. You act like he’s EJ.

      • +1 Igor is not in the business of positivity and never has been, whoever he is (and I think we know) …. Jozy was, is, and will remain a beast. And when he gets out of his cage, God help the non-believers.

      • He needs to get the hell out of England. He should find a nice team somewhere that are yearly participants in UEFA football and be their go to guy. He should try France nxt, really.

  5. Whatsup with Freddy Adu? He can’t even crack the game day roster for a team in Serbia? Is there more to this or have things really become that bad for him?

    • The dude never impresses. It can’t be a coincedence that he doesn’t play every time he joins a new club. At least he’s not bitching about play time on social media making his situation worse. Most likely, he’s having a good time making decent money and living a pretty solid lifestyle.

Look at Johnny Bornstein; people need to face facts that not every American abroad cares about playing
