One of the Americans currently seeing more consistent minutes than most in a foreign league now has his first goal for his new club.
Edgar Castillo opened his scoring account with Atlas on Saturday, finding the back of the net in the club’s 2-1 defeat to Monterrey. Castillo struck in the 84th minute of the match to trim the deficit and give Atlas hope of pulling out a result, but they were unable to find an equalizer in a battle of Liga MX’s second- and third-placed teams.
The veteran fullback played from whistle to whistle in the match that marked the Zorros‘ 10th of the Apertura campaign, continuing his impressive feat of playing every minute of every Liga MX game this season for the club he joined in June and further improving his chances of being recalled by Jurgen Klinsmann for next month’s friendlies.
Castillo was not the only American to see time in that Atlas-Monterrey clash. Under-23 U.S. Men’s National Team attacker Joaquin Alonso Hernandez came off the bench with 32 minutes left to play in order to help Monterrey close out the game. The appearance was the 20-year-old Hernandez’s third of the season for the Rayados.
The other goal from a player in the Americans Abroad contingent this weekend came courtesy of Andrew Wooten, who extended his scoring streak to four matches. Wooten netted via a late penalty kick in SV Sandhausen’s duel with Eintracht Braunschweig on Friday, but it was not enough to prevent his side from suffering a 2-1 defeat.
While there were positive developments, there were also some negative ones. Michael Orozco was sent off for the second time this season after receiving two yellow cards in Puebla’s scoreless draw with Chivas de Guadalajara late on Sunday, and both Fabian Johnson and John Brooks failed to dress for Borussia Moenchengladbach and Hertha Berlin, respectively.

they are, butl i’ve never been to am/pm, nor do i speak spanish, but i always have an ad for their chili cheese dog in spanish. it autoplays and has no pause button. and it replays. really annoying. Chrome browser.
i will say, the non-video ads are spot on and reflect my google searches and never cause problems. it’s the video ads that i’m having issues with and that are random. although the Tide ad in spanish that just played reminded me i need to do my laundry.
yea, Ives, please filter the ads to not allow those annoying sound loops that wont mute, etc
They make this site NSFW because audio plays randomly without prompting from the user. Intrusive and embarrassing on more than a handful of occasions.

i’m usually listening to music or a podcast, so mute isn’t an option. granted, nothing has ever played that embarrassed me. for me, it’s just the annoyance.
and as i type that, my computer is playing sound from another tab which has a different article open from SBI!

I tried to find a direct email address for you but couldn’t. Obviously, please feel free to pull this from the comments section. I just wanted to tell you that I don’t like the “fashion tv” ads running on your site. They are pretty sketchy. I think you are doing a great service to us US soccer fans and really appreciate your site, but I won’t keep checking it if you don’t filter the ads more. I expect that is easier said than done, but I just wanted to let you know.
Now I’m trying to refresh over and over just to see what you are talking about.
The autoplay doesn’t always start right away. It’s kinda freaky actually— I’ve been away from my computer for as long as 45 mins and the SBI window will suddenly start rolling the audio.

I second the complaint about ads. I know you have to monetize the site, and I have no problem with banner ads and even pop-ups, but the video ads that autoplay *with sound* have made me think twice about coming here.
This is the best site for US soccer fans, iMHO, but whenever I come here my computer slows way down and sometimes freezes. Even after I leave the site my computer runs slower and I’m better off getting off the internet and back on in that case. At the very least SBI needs a better/faster server.
Use Adobe Flash block (through your browser) if you don’t want the ads to appear/play. I did this and my computer runs a lot better. Then you just click “allow” when you visit individual sites where you want to watch content (like youtube).
The SBI site in particular was pretty bad before I had that enabled. Ives has said the video ads aren’t supposed to play automatically, but they did anyways and often crashed my browser.

Apparently John Brooks has been CUT by Hertha Berlin. Terrible news if true.

There is talk about the actual German notification to the media, the word “Released” is the closest translation from German speaking posters. released from BL1 to U23 team? or released from contract?. Hopefully, we will have more detailed info tomorrow morning.
The only item I found abut the Brooks situation in German newspapers was the article linked to by SBI, and commenter bryan as well, from yesterday’s issue of the Berliner Zeitung.
That article stated, or rather predicted (a newspaper opinion) something. The German words: auf etw. verzichten were used, the English translation:: to dispense with, to waive, to abandon, to do without something (or someone). The Berliner Zeitung predicted: “As soon as this Wednesday Luhukay will waive (abandon, dispense with) John Anthony Brooks”. Notice that they did not say “may”.
If it was only a matter of Brooks’ being demoted to the reserve team they would have said that. But they didn’t. So yes, the Berliner Zeitung is predicting that Brooks will be let go completely by Hertha Berlin as soon as this Wednesday.
What?! I didn’t see anything on Twitter. If true this is very unexpected considering he started last week with no apparent problems. Hopefully it was just that he played for the reserves, though even then that’s not good.
Come in Brooks, get your big boy shorts on. This isn’t the first worrisome action taken by the club on him.
all everyone knows is that one report from Berliner Zeitung. i think we can say, at the very least, that JAB has officially been sent to the U-23 team and likely has no future at Hertha Berlin with that coach. which is terrible news as a US fan because it limits him to reserve team games until January.
straight up dropping him just makes no business sense because he has value. but as a US fan, i hope it happens if he is really done at Hertha. at least then he can sign elsewhere as a free agent in search for first team time.

Ditto! He was dropped to the reserves due to inconsistent performances. Not great, but not as disastrous as people are making it seem. The thing that strikes me is the fact that if just alerts other teams that he is not the finished enough to hang on to the 5th worst team in the Bundesliga. If a better team got him, they would put him on Bundesliga Reserves.
