Sophomore Dale Ludwig is an American hero.

His golden goal helped the American University Eagles upset SBI No. 1 UCLA Friday night.

In one of the program’s most historic victories, American never trailed on their way to winning 2-1. Stephen Hauschild gave the Eagles the lead in the 30th minute, and the Bruins’ Abu Danladi evened the match in 77th minute. In overtime, Ludwig was able to slot the ball past Bruins goalkeeper Earl Edward to send the Eagles into a frenzy.

UCLA will play No. 11 New Mexico on Sunday.

The marquee match-up on Friday turned out to be a bit of a dud, as SBI No. 6 Maryland and No. 15 University of Maryland-Baltimore County played to a 0-0 tie in front of  7,284 fans. The Terrapins had nine more shots than UMBC, forcing Phil Breno to make six saves on the night.

After losing both games on opening weekend, Wake Forest topped No. 7 UConn 2-1 with a golden goal scored by Ricky Greensfelder in the 3rd minute of overtime. His near post shot barely beat Jacob Wagmeister, as he dove to his right and got a hand to the attempt, but his tip was not enough, as Greensfelder jumped into the stands, overfilled with joy.

Meanwhile, No. 10 Virginia was stunned by Tulsa’s late overtime golden goal. The Golden Hurricanes’ Cameron Drackett blasted a left-footed volley from the top of the box past Virginia’s keeper and into the net, sending the Tulsa bench into madness.
