Top five teams have not had the best of starts to the season, with upsets occurring seemingly every other day.
The SBI No. 2 Washington Huskies became the latest top side to pick up a loss, as Antonio Lokossou scored a 94th-minute golden goal to give St. Mary’s a 2-1 victory for their first win against a top 5 ranked opponent in their university’s history. Washington attempted 33 shots but only produced one goal. The Huskies will look to rebound against No. 7 UConn this upcoming Friday.
The biggest match of the weekend lost a little luster after SBI No. 1 UCLA lost to American University on Friday, but the Bruins rebounded from the loss to top No. 11 New Mexico 2-1 on Sunday night. Freshman Christian Chavez scored the game-winning goal in the 74th minute, while Leo Stolz scored from the penalty spot in the 7th minute. The Lobos attempted 18 shots on the night, while the Bruins only attempted three. The lone goal for the Lobos came from James Rogers in the 31st minute.
No.5 North Carolina put together a pair of 1-0 victories this weekend, beating Old Dominion and VCU. Forward and SBI MLS draft prospect Andy Craven scored both game-winning goals for the Tar Heels, who are now 3-1-0 this year.
Finally, SBI honorable mention Syracuse continued their undefeated season with a 1-0 win against St. John’s on Saturday. Sophomore Chris Nanco scored the only goal to make the Orange 4-0-0 on the year. The Orange will now face their toughest task to date when they play No. 3 Notre Dame on Saturday, as conference play begins for many teams across the country.
