The Charlotte 49ers looked like they might be headed for a respectable tie against a higher-ranked opponent, but two late goals helped the SBI No. 23-ranked team show why they belong in the Top 25.

In their first Conference USA match, the 49ers knocked out No. 13 New Mexico, 2-0, in the final five minutes of regular time. Dominic Bonilla followed up an outstanding weekend last week by providing two assists Friday, leading his team to a well-earned victory.

Brandt Bronico connected with Bonilla to score the first goal of the match in the 86th minute, and Harrison Steadman scored the second in under two minutes after the first. Charlotte is now 6-1, and the Lobos are 5-2-1.

SBI No. 3 UCLA suffered another shocking upset, dropping a 1-0 decision to San Diego. The Toreros’ Patrick Zimmer scored the lone goal in the 15th minute, and the team held the Bruins to 5 shots, with only 1 on-goal throughout the night.

No. 10 Notre Dame remain unbeaten against ACC opposition this year, as they handed No. 6 North Carolina a 2-0 defeat in front of 3,007 people. Freshman Jeffrey Farina redirected a fast-paced cross from Jon Gallager to score the Fighting Irish’s first goal in the 37th minute. Senior Leon Brown scored the second in the 71st minute.
