The 2020 European Championships are set to be hosted in cities across the continent, with the tournament’s finals and semifinals scheduled to be held at one of the sport’s most famous stadiums.

UEFA announced Friday that the Euro 2020 finals and semifinals will be held in London’s Wembley Arena, which will join a list of 12 other cities in hosting the tournament.

“We are delighted,” said English FA chairman Greg Dyke. “It’s nice to win one! Wembley is a great stadium and we are delighted to be holding the finals of this tournament.

“Wembley has been completely rebuilt since 1996 and is it a wonderful stadium.”

UEFA president Michel Platini, who initially revealed the plans for a continent-wide tournament after Euro 2012, is looking forward to seeing games played across Europe.

“UEFA Euro 2020 will be a historic occasion, with matches of our flagship national team competition taking place in every corner of our continent,” Platini said. “It is truly, therefore, a Euro for Europe, where fans will have the unique opportunity to be part of the UEFA European Football Championship right on their doorstep.”

The 13 cities were selected from 19 applicants. Wales, Sweden, Belarus, Bulgaria, Macedonia and Israel submitted unsuccessful bids.

The 2020 tournament represents the 60th edition of the European Championships. Meanwhile, the 2016 tournament is set to take place in France.

  2. Sweden is the only surprising omission. New stadium and all.

Wonder why Spain chose Bilbao over the new Valencia stadium? And if Azerbajian doesn’t qualify?

Live in the present, tomorrow is never promised, so make it so beautiful it will be worth remembering. Happiness is a journey, just as life is. Enjoy the ride.” -Unknown
