In a decision that shocked no one, Orlando City Soccer Club midfielder Kevin Molino was named as the USL Pro MVP for the second time in three years, Friday at a press conference in Sacramento.
The Trinidad & Tobago international, who has signed an MLS contract and will play for Orlando next year, led the third-tier league with a league-record 20 goals as well as nine assists.
Though Orlando were upset in the first round of the playoffs by the No. 8 seed and USL Pro Championship finalist Harrisburg City Islanders, Molino helped Orlando to a 19-4-5 record, good for 62 points and the No. 1 seed in their last year in USL Pro.
Molino beat out Sacramento Republic FC talisman Rodrigo Lopez and Richmond Kickers forward Matthew Delicâte to win the award which, along with every other award was voted on by USL Pro team management and select members from each media market.
Here’s a look at the other award winners in USL Pro:
GOALKEEPER OF THE YEAR
Though he featured in just 18 of the Rochester Rhino’s 28 matches, John McCarthy was another obvious selection, posting a 0.722 Goals Against Average while keeping shutouts in 10 matches, both of which led the league by a wide margin.
McCarthy’s strong play helped lead Rochester to the playoffs as the New York side finished with a 10-10-8 record, giving them the No. 6 seed. They were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by No. 3 LA Galaxy II.
DEFENDER OF THE YEAR
In a year where Sacramento Republic FC allowed the joint third-fewest goals in the entire league, defender Nemanja Vuković was a steady veteran presence in a back line that featured a rotating cast of starters throughout the start of the season.
The 30-year-old Vuković started the season out at left back before moving to the center to shore up a back line that featured a first year pro, a journeyman and no clear first-choice player at left back until the recent signing of James Kiffe.
The former Columbus Crew man was solid all year in the regular season before netting a brace in the opening round of the playoffs to see Sacramento past visiting Wilmington.
COACH OF THE YEAR
In his first year back after a four-year hiatus in managing, Sacramento Republic FC head coach Preki was named USL Pro Coach of the Year for turning an expansion team into the No. 2 seed with a 17-7-4 record.
Preki was instrumental in the success of the first-year franchise, turning several journeymen such as Vuković and MVP finalist Rodrigo Lopez into true league stars.
