It’s been a middling start to Real Madrid’s 2014-15 La Liga campaign, but the Spanish giants have a great opportunity to get back on track Tuesday against lower table squad Elche.

Real Madrid has come to regret selling off some of their midfield depth over the summer, but they should still be able to overpower Elche offensively as they did Deportivo La Coruña last weekend, when Cristiano Ronaldo netted a hat trick in an 8-2 thrashing.

There’s plenty of other compelling action today as well, with Arsenal hosting Southampton and Liverpool welcoming Middlesbrough to Anfield in League Cup action.

Elsewhere in Europe, Bayern Munich host a Bundesliga fixture against Paderborn. Both are involved in a four-way tie atop the table, and Tuesday’s match could provide at least a temporary league leader.

In Serie A action, AC Milan travels to Empoli in what should be a positive result for the Rossoneri.

Back in the United States, the Portland Timbers and Sporting Kansas City can both take control of their groups with a win in CONCACAF Champions League play.

  1. I was just gonna make an arguement for why the u.s should adopt a formation/style where Altidore isn’t the starting the forward but no one will listen to me now lol.

    If you’re curious

    Guzan
    Chandler Gonzalez Brooks Johnson
    Diskerud Bradley Hyndmann
    Gyau Johannson Green

Yes I know Johannson is injured I’m talking about the future

    • he’s fouled a couple times, won a couple fouls, scored a goal on a one touch-turn-shoot, and has played moderately well, persay.

  2. interesting moment. Nzonzi was grabbing Jozy, dribbled up field and was taken out by Rodwell (sticking up for his team mate). Nzonzi engages Rodwell forehead to forehead, Jozy comes flying in and shoves Nzonzi back 5 yards. i bet Nzonzi’s still angry about the redcard Jozy drew on him. haha Jozy 2 Nzonzi 0

side note: good to see rodwell sticking up for his new clubmates, those things build chem when you know your teamate has your back

  3. ref carded rodwell for tackle and nzonzi for afters, but nzonzi hit/chocked rodwell pretty blatantly after the tackle. Yellow probably fair, but red for the choke wouldn’t have been unreasonable.

    • tru but it was only because Nzonzi was holding Jozy around his neck to get the ball. sticking up for his teammates, yet still a wreckless challenge. ive seen wayyyyy worse…. but you did say “this week” so it probably holds true

    • Wow, what a goal for Okazaki against Eintract….glad to see it wasn’t Chandler who was beat on that. I have no idea how Okazaki has bounced around the German league, his passion and style has to be valued and I would think he is a fan favorite everywhere he has played. The first goal for Mainz you could partially blame Chandler (mostly the CB though), however I thought the forward was offside…..
