Soccer Tuesday: Your Running Commentary

Frank Lampard comes on Manchester City
By CARL SETTERLUND

With eight UEFA Champions league games on Tuesday, options abound for those able to sneak away from work or stream online.

Manchester City already have their backs against the wall in a competitive Group E that also includes Bayern Munich and red-hot Roma, which is still unbeaten this season.

City manager Manuel Pellegrini will be hoping the feel-good story of the past couple weeks continues on with Frank Lampard an option to make his unlikely return to UCL play. A second straight loss for Man City would put them in peril of dropping out in the group stage.

In Group F, which is similarly competitive, Barcelona will try to take control of the group while visiting Paris Saint-Germain. PSG will be without Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Bayern Munich, Chelsea, and Ajax are also in action today.

  1. Is Cavani overrated? This is a guy who was slaying defenses in Serie A. One of the best strikers in Italy over the past few years and he’s quite good in Ligue 1 but seems to flop in the Champions League or with Uruguay? whats the deal

    • I know he had a hamstring injury a while back and he has played as a proper Striker in years. Behind Suarez and Zlatan both.

Its prolly a combination of things.

    • Who knows. I have no idea how anyone can tell who played well or poorly anyway. I tried to watch a match the other week. It was just a long ball, ping pong match.

    • He is being rested. He has played every game since he transferred (4 in less than 2 weeks) and he is not game fit. He can’t even last a game.

      • He is being rested because he played 90 minutes yesterday with the u21s instead of being used today when BCFC is short on wingers for a game that counts.

      • Part of this was my fault in terms of using incorrect terms. They are trying to get him back in game shape. Clearly, he is not in game shape. His playing in U21 is training for that because the game speed is not as high. It is clearly not as demanding.

I understand your interpretation of him not dressing for the game as being a slight but c’mon. They guy played every game so far and CANNOT last a full 90, let alone 50′. Why start a player that you KNOW you will have to sub off? Maybe the fact that Lee Clark was still speaking very highly of Shea in Sky Sports and Birmingham city articles 4/5 days ago, states that he sees him ‘strictly’ as left winger and Shea can’t go a full ’90 on a Championship level might have more to do with it.

  2. what does it mean that Lampard is still scoring goals in England? can he replicate that form for NYCFC or is it just cause of his great teammates at Man City?

  3. For Birmingham: Spector out injured; Shea not in 18 (played yesterday for developmental team) and Packwood on the bench. Wow, that was a fast tumble down the depth chart for Shea!

    • OMG, the ability of you people to read too much into things is mind-blowing. You also must not understand the concept of context. Shea does not have game day endurance, so it would be safe to assume he is playing in a developmental game to build up endurance.

How did I come up with this (more rational) conclusion instead of yours? I don’t know…how about these facts: he played the 1st game after his loan deal from Stoke where he didn’t play for roughly 1 1/2 years and has played for every game since:

      – Sept 16: Birmingham 0-2 Sheff Wed – Started and went 45 min
      – Sept 20: Birmingham 2-2 Norwich – came on as a sub at 54 min
      – Sept 27: Birmingham 1-2 Fulham – came on as a sub at 45 min

Even star players rarely play 4 games straight in a 2 week period.

      • So he plays 90 minutes yesterday for the U21s instead of another 1/2 today and you don’t think he is having some issues? Oh – did I mention that by Spector being out (which they knew before yesterday), they moved their right wing to right back so they are short on the wingers for today and they still played Shea in a U21 match?
