Americans Abroad: Weekend Preview

Julian Green Hamburg 2

By FRANCO PANIZO

Two of the more exciting prospects in the U.S. Men’s National Team pipeline could have another chance to showcase why so many observers are high on them on Saturday, and they might do so against one another.

Julian Green and Joe Gyau could square off against one another in one of the more intriguing potential match-ups involving players from the Americans Abroad contingent when Hamburg pay a visit to Borussia Dortmund this weekend. Green seems the more likely of the two to start after recovering from bruised ribs and returning to training for last-placed Hamburg this week, but he could be matched up with Gyau late in the showdown if the just-turned 22-year-old spark plug is handed his second league appearance of the young Bundesliga campaign.

Tim Howard will not be playing a fellow American, but he will line up against former club Manchester United in one of the more high-profile tilts of the weekend. Howard is fresh off a five-save performance in the UEFA Europa League, and will aim to deliver another big outing as the Toffees’ defensive anchor on Sunday when he returns to Old Trafford.

For Brad Guzan, a similarly difficult test awaits him. Aston Villa host Manchester City on Saturday, and are in sore need of a victory to restore confidence after dropping their last two league matches against top opposition by identical 3-0 marks. Guzan will likely need to turn in a strong showing for the Villans to have a shot at grabbing a result, which the club needs to avoid falling further away from a place in Europe.

  1. How has Bornstein managed to continue getting a paycheck in Mexico, He’s played 12 league games and 26 games overall since 2010.

  2. I happened to be visiting London this past weekend, and none other than Juan Agudelo was on my flight from Newark. He was in front of me in line at customs, with someone who I believe must be his agent. Perhaps good news? His Twitter has been silent as of late. Coincidentally, I also saw Oguchi Onyewu (with his beautiful WAG in tow) at Marylebone station taking the train to Wembley for the NFL game. Didn’t want to interrupt him while he was with his girl, but he looked lean and fit. Hopefully both these guys suit up again somewhere soon.
