Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

Geoff Cameron Stoke City 99

By FRANCO PANIZO

Return from injury. Make regular season debut. Deliver solid performance.

Geoff Cameron checked off all those boxes for Stoke City on Sunday, as he contributed 28 minutes off the bench in a 2-1 victory over Swansea City. Cameron entered the game with the score at 1-1, but he helped make the difference in his first Premiership appearance of the campaign by picking off a pass that led to the Potters’ winner. The versatile veteran, who just recovered from a hernia issue, was deployed in a defensive midfield role and his impactful showing there could pave the way for more playing time in the near future.

Cameron was not the only American to make his season debut this weekend. Having also just returned to full health after dealing with an ACL injury, Terrence Boyd was inserted into RB Leipzig’s clash with FC Nurnberg on Friday. Boyd played 29 minutes in his club debut, but was on the losing end as he and Leipzig were blanked, 1-0.

While Boyd and Cameron provided a quick jolt of energy to an Americans Abroad contingent that had been growing a bit stale in recent weeks, there were some negative developments involving two returning U.S. Men’s National Team players. Jozy Altidore did not make Sunderland’s 18-man roster for a humiliating 8-0 loss to Southampton on Saturday, and Joe Corona suffered a foot injury as a substitute in Club Tijuana’s 2-1 win vs. Queretaro on Friday.

What do you think of these performances? How impressed have you been by Rubin this season? Surprised to not see Altidore, Shea and Green receive minutes for their clubs?

  1. I love me some American’s Abroad, but where is the American’s Not Abroad coverage??? Seattle-LA is basically a Supporter’s Shield home and away playoff, with a celebrity cast to boot, and I haven’t heard a peep from SBI. Nor have I heard anything from the broadcaster. I mean, it deserves at least a thirty second blip, right? What’s going on guys??? MLS “re-branding” practically broke this site but no coverage of arguably the biggest match of the year?

  2. I’m more worried about Mix. Started and lasted 36 mins usually means an injury. Anyone with knowledge?

All the guys who played international matches are understandably benched. That’s a lot of travel. Green and FJ are still coming off injuries.

Shea is a massive disappointment. Not even making the bench? Adu is shocking. Say what you will about him, but he could still play well in MLS. He can’t even get playing time in Serbia?

Welcome back Cameron and Boyd. Up next: Aron and Williams.

    • Ryan SATX its a shame Freddy Adu can’t even dress for a team in Serbia but with that said he’s on a team (FK Jagodina) that’s 3rd in the Serbian SuperLiga, Serbia’s top division and this league, based on UEFA coefficient, is a better/high standard league than the leagues of TURKEY, DENMARK, NORWAY, SCOTLAND etc.

    • Johannsson is still coming off injury, I believe. Kljestan being aged out as Anderlecht want to give minutes to younger guys they can sell on. Just part of what happens in the selling leagues.

      • Thanks, I’m trying to get back into following americans abroad again to get to know the national team players for this cycle.

    • The failed move to MLS hurt him- the team moved on without him in the plans and then the MLS move fell through. And, as mentioned, he is in a selling league.

  3. Who is still saying Altidore should stick it out at Sunderland? lol place is disaster land. That club may be in the EPL, but it isn’t worth it.

    • He didn’t even make the 18 so I’m sure Sunderland would be happy to take his wages off the books.

Where would he go? He hasn’t really covered himself in glory there. Back to Holland?

      • Who cares, just come back to MLS. I see sides in this league at least trying to play better football then that mess.

      • I didn’t say they were as good. I said that some clubs in MLS actually make more of an effort to play a better style then what you’ll see from Sunderland. Try to watch 3 or 4 Sunderland matches and you’ll honestly start to hate the game. The midfield can’t string 2 passes together and most creative play you’ll find is having a go from 40 yards out.

      • It really comes down to how many times I watched players from all over the field on Sunderland take shots they had no business taking. I understand Sunderland might have to play a certain way to get results and of coarse its going to be harder to play an attractive style in a much better league. However that doesn’t explain why you think taking a 40 yard shot is a good idea over and over.

      • EEEEEEEXXXXXACTLY. Sunderland are terrible. I honestly do not believe they would win the MLS Cup or Supporters’ Shield……

      • I love it how he gets rested for one game after the short turnaround after international break, it immediately turns into “he can’t even crack the 18.” You do realize he’s been in the lineup every other game and was either starting or in the lineup for 90% of the games last season?

    • He might as well just come back to MLS. He’ll increase his wages and with LAG, NYRB, and NYCFC all with DP slots available, there are enough glamour clubs that would want him on the roster

    • As crazy as it seems, I don’t think he’s necessarily done there yet. I think he will get a couple starts at some point to prove himself. These things do tend to go in cycles.

    • A very down week if not a down period for Americans playing abroad. It is all well and good for Jurgen to talk about hunger and playing against the best competition in the top leagues. But maybe we just don’t have that many that are good enough to oerform at that level. Also “his” Germans don’t seem to be doing much better. Or maybe this week is an aberration,

      • its partially an issue of trying to set the expectations as high as possible. Jurgen only cares about excellence to him that is the point of playing, so he doesn’t care how many people’s careers he retards by telling them to try for Europe because he doesn’t consider those careers to be accomplishments in the first place. Remember what he told Dempsey, you play for Fullham, big deal, get to the champions league. In attempting to do that Depmsey ended up back in MLS. I’m not saying I disagree with Klinsmin I’m just saying he considered the churn and burn to be part of doing business.
