Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

An injury may have limited Mix Diskerud’s participation in training this past week, but it did not stop him from starting and making an impact for Rosenborg.

Diskerud helped Rosenborg assure themselves of a place in Europe next season, assisting on the eventual game-winner in a 3-1 triumph over Sandnes Ulf on Sunday. The U.S. Men’s National Team midfielder showed plenty of skill and impressive vision on the 44th-minute play, collecting a pass and lifting it back into the path of darting teammate Pal Helland. The victory gave Rosenborg 54 points on the season, and guaranteed that they will finish among the top three clubs in the Eliteserien.

Herculez Gomez also had a notable outing, scoring his first Liga MX goal for Tigres on Saturday. Gomez scored via a technically-sound and gorgeous curler to the far post in the 40th minute to give Tigres a 2-0 lead, but Monterrey came back to record a point in the 2-2 draw. The goal in the Clasico Regio was the veteran’s third across all competitions for Tigres this season, and his first in league play since scoring for Santos Laguna in March 2013.

Another forward who enjoyed a memorable weekend was Jann George, the former U.S. Under-23 player. George, who is the son of an American serviceman and German mother, made his professional debut by coming off the bench for SpVgg Greuther Furth on Friday. Unfortunately for the 22-year-old George and the club, they suffered a 5-2 defeat at the hands of FSV Frankfurt.

  1. What happened with Brek Shea at Birmingham City. When he first got there he was starting a little, definately seeing playing time. Got a man of the match in his first outing I think. The coach seemed to be praising him at the time. Now it seems he cant get off the bench. It seemed he was finally starting to turn things around a little for himself. What happened? Did he piss someone off?

  2. Do any League Championship yanks’ teams ever win consistently? Great that most get a run in, but it’s almost always a draw or loss.

  3. Love Mix, I hope JK’s experiment with him in defense was only a way to get hi to focus in defense, but he needs to be involved in the attack. Great vision and touch. Would be great for him to step up a league and hopefully improve.

    And he is straight dreamy

    • defensive mid. only watched about half of it, but stoke were overrun the whole game–the scoreline could’ve been a lot worse. from what i saw, cameron didn’t do anything notable, either good or bad.

  4. Anyone feel like, ironically, since Klinsmann has come in our Yanks-abroad fun has been steadily declining. I’m not saying it is caused by him. It just seems to be happening, and ironically seeing as he is the coach pushing for more european based players.

    • I don’t agree.

      This is mostly cyclical

Five or six years ago, there were a lot fewer Americans Abroad listed on SBI but most of them got significant playing time.

Freidel, Hahnemann, Howard,Holden,Keller, Spector , Dempsey, Edu, Mikey, Dolo, Benny, Gooch, Demerit,

A lot of them got older and retired or lost their places or got hurt; some came back to MLS. Eventually a lot of the next generation will be earning regular time
