UCLA’s tough weekend started with a agonizing 2-3 defeat to No. 16 California in overtime on Friday.
The Golden Bears’ Stefano Bonomo scored the lone first-half goal, and Chivas USA academy starlet, Paul Salcedo, added the second in the 79th minute. The No. 8 Bruins’ scored two goals in the final five minutes of regular time to force overtime, as Larry Ndjock and Javan Torre scored in the 86th and 90th minute respectively.
Christian Thierjung claimed the golden goal in the 99th minute to improve the Golden Bears to 7-3. The Bruins are now 6-3-2 and will play No. 7 Stanford Sunday, while the Bears play San Diego State.
No. 6 Syracuse cruised to their eleventh win of the season, as Tyler Hilliard led the Orange past Wake Forest 3-1 with two goals on the night. Chris Nanco scored the third goal for the Orange, while Hank Gauger scored the only goal for the Demon Deacons in the 87th minute. The Orange allowed their third goal of the season, but they have won seven consecutive matches.
Meanwhile, Patrick Hodan gave N0. 9 Notre Dame a 3-2 win in overtime against Louisville. The Gightin never trailed on the night, as Vince Cicciarelli and Andrew O’Malley tallied a goal as well. Louisville have lost four consecutive matches and sit at 5-5-1 this season. Tim Kubel and Ben Strong scored the two goals for the Cardinals.
